Surfing Montauk with Debra Rose: April 2025

Surf Trips in Disguise

For those that travel the globe to surf, there is the bonus that areas with desirable waves are also typically beautiful and captivating.  Whether they are untouched, touristic, chilly or tropical, any destination with waves is automatically special.

What happens with you are a mixed group, or traveling with (gasp) a non-surfer? You chose places with additional features than the surf, including culture, physical activities in and out of the water, special cuisine, new language or any other areas of interest.  When the water is flat or the conditions are not cooperating, the surfers and landlubbers are going to be cranky. We thought of a few destinations perfect for surf travel that gives everyone something to be excited about.

France: At the very least you will have daily croissants, excellent wine, thoughtful meals, stylish locals.  Hossegor and Biarritz receive the most press, but the southwest corner of the Hexagon offers plenty of places to explore.  Like many areas, fall is the best time to go.

Iceland: Most East End surfers are not hunting down cold destinations, but Iceland is as naturally stunning as it is rugged.  Not many can say they surfed here, and you will see it in the minimal crowds.  You can go when the days are endlessly long, or when waves are consistent in the winter, with the added benefit of the Northern Lights.  Exploring the geysers, lava caves, the Blue Lagoon, and the charming city of Reykjavík, there is something to occupy everyone.

Morocco: There is a problem if anyone encounters boredom where Montauk meets Arabia.  Some refer to it as the Mexico to Europe, Morocco has excellent consistent waves, point breaks and a booming surf culture which makes it easier to find gear you may have left behind.  Mint tea, shopping in the Souk, camels on the beach, organic food and a mix of African, European, Middle Eastern cultures, fall and winter will be your best months to visit.

New Zealand: Worth the trek around the planet, New Zealand’s North and South islands offer beach breaks, point breaks, and endless adventure.  You will never have enough time to do all the hiking, wine tasting, cave touring, thermal pooling and exploring so you will just have to go back.  Winter is the best time to go especially on the North Island which will be warmer than the water on the South Island.

Surfing around the world will please any surfer and finding locations that offer so much more will make everyone happy on vacation.  Happy Surfing!
