Getting a table at Second House Tavern has never been easier…they offer reservations online thru opentable.com or by calling 668.2877. The interesting thing about Second House is that they have 2 dining rooms: the Grill Room opened in the winter months of December and has been a home for most locals, a more casual & laid back dining room with a refurbished old bar. You feel like you’re in an old ski town in upstate. The tables were made from an old building located on Grand and Ludlow Street in Manhattan and old post and beams from a North Carolina barn. Located right on the Fort Pond, which is New York State’s second largest fresh water pond, owner, Jon Chapski and General Manager/Managing Partner Abby Monahan watch over the dining room, while Executive Chef Jeremy Blutstein’s technique coaches his team to perfection
In the Grill Room I suggest you start your evening with the chef’s lobster sliders, point Judith crispy calamari & rock shrimp or the firecracker lollypop chicken wings with thai chilies, garlic, cilantro make you wish you had ordered another order. Don’t forget to try the clam chowder, winner of the Montauk’s People’s Choice Award in 08. Jeremy offers some of the best crispy pork belly I have ever tasted, tender and has a zest that makes you want more, very unusual for Montauk but fits perfect with his menu. Steamed local clams with English mustard broth, fresh thyme & bacon, the fish & chips served the proper way with fresh caught Cod, and the medium rare bone-in ribeye with hotel butter & frites was quite delicious. The Tavern offers a well crafted beer selection from chilled pints of Lobster Ale and Old Speckled Hen to Montauk Light and over 30 bottle beers from Blue Point Toasted Lager to Good Island Honker Ale.
Regulars to Second House Tavern all have their favorites. Mine are the wood roasted mussels, they are prepared in the wood oven with cracked black pepper & lemon white-wine broth and grilled bread. You will never go wrong with a fish special here. The Tavern dinner menu, we recommend you start with heirloom tomato salad with avocado, fresh mint, watermelon, farmers cheese or the fire roasted clams casino with parsley, garlic, roasted red pepper, house cured bacon before moving on to the Montauk striped bass with wild mushrooms, red curry broth, fried leeks, we tried the gun powder chicken, simply for its name served with baby “bella” mushroom, caramelized garlic served over herb roasted garlic broth, the emphasis on the chicken is the brine that Jeremy uses, PERFECT! In all Jeremy’s dishes, the emphasis when possible is placed on the local component, from the farms in Amagansett to the seafood off Montauk Point.
A very nice selection of wines by the glass and the most delicious dessert known as the “half baked”, served with vanilla ice cream but you should request the local hand crafted blueberry-sugar cookie ice cream and this will complete your experience.
Second House Tavern offers an amazing three-course menu ($30 dinner) offers a tasty round-up of flavors and may be paired with wine or beer from craft & micro beer selection for $6 or $10 surcharge).
