Good day and welcome to this month’s edition of Montauk Fire Department Corner. I hope everyone had a safe and fun Labor Day, and that you’re getting ready for a beautiful fall season in Montauk.
I would like to start out by thanking all the members of the Montauk Fire Department and our brothers and sisters from our neighboring Departments for attending this year’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony at Hook Mill in East Hampton. This year is the 22nd anniversary of that terrible, tragic day in New York City. When an event of this magnitude takes place, it sometimes feels like it was yesterday, and at other times it feels like 50 years ago. That is why it is heartening to me to see all of our local Police and Fire Departments continuing to step up and salute the men and women who lost their lives on 9/11. Here are photos from the Montauk Fire Department’s participation. “We Must Never Forget.”
On Sunday, September 17th the Montauk Fire Department celebrated the 40th anniversary of MFD BIG BUCKS Scholarship Drawing. It was a beautiful late summer day, and well attended by several hundred ticket holders. Everyone enjoyed the food, drink, and the music of the Nancy Atlas band and Joe Delia while anxiously waiting to see if they would be BIG BUCKS winners. The Montauk Fire Department gave out $165,000 to over 40 winners. Thank you to Rick White and his committee for running the day-to-day operations for Big Bucks, to Ed Eurell and his committee for putting on the party, to all the MFD members who helped out, and especially to the people from all over who buy BIG BUCKS tickets and continue to support the Montauk Fire Department. Here are some photos from the day. Here are the The Top Five Winners:
- $50,000: Judith & Chris O’Brien and Jen & Brian Rade, Montauk, NY
- $30,000: Ruth Cronin, Malverne, NY
- $20,000: Bill & Robin Valveri, Tarpon Springs, FL
- $15,000: Daniel Dempsey, Centerport, NY
- $10,000: Brian Masten & Kent Drum, Commack, NY
Thank you to all who showed up on August 30th to the recruiting meeting hosted at the Montauk Fire Department. As you can imagine, recruitment is an ongoing exercise for any volunteer organization, and we are no different. We have several people interested in joining following the recruitment meeting. If you are interested in joining the Montauk Fire Department, and helping your Montauk neighbors, please call (631) 668-5695 for information. Thank you.
That’s it for this month. Thanks for reading the Montauk Fire Department Corner and for staying up to date with the comings and goings of the MFD. See you next month.
