Montauk Fire Department Corner: April 2023

Welcome to this month’s edition of the Montauk Fire Department Corner. I hope everyone had a fun and safe Saint Patrick’s Day, and I’m sure you’re busy getting ready for Easter and Passover. We at the MFD had a wonderful Parade weekend.

On Sunday, March 26th the MFD Officers, men and women, were proud to accompany this year’s Grand Marshal Jim Grimes in the line of march. Jim led the Montauk Friends of Erin’s 61st Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in fine form. He was accompanied by members of the Amityville American Legion Pipe band, members of the Montauk Friends of Erin and his brothers and sisters from the Montauk Fire Department.  Jim is a legacy fireman who has served as a volunteer in the Montauk Fire Department for over forty-five years. His commitment and dedication to the community is well documented and his selection as Grand Marshal well deserved. We wish Jim the best of luck in his upcoming year as Grand Marshal. Please enjoy the photos of this wonderful day.

I’d like to offer a belated “welcome aboard” and congratulations to seven newly appointed Members of the Montauk Fire Department. Dawson Lenahan, Nhailinger Lorenzo, Joseph Panzarino, Tyler Quaresimo, John Rutkowski, Adrian Sanchez and Ryann Ward have recently become Members of the Department. They are currently undergoing their Fire Fighter One training. I know I speak for all the Members of the Montauk Fire Department when I say that we are all rooting for you to successfully complete your basic training and become an official part of our Department. Thank you for your dedication to our community and most importantly – stay safe.

Lastly, I’d like to share a safety tip for our Montauk year-round and seasonal residents. Have you ever looked at the access to your home and thought, “I wonder if a fire truck or ambulance could safely fit down my driveway, if necessary?” If you have, chances are there may not be enough access. Do you know that you are required to have your house number clearly visible (and at least 4 inches tall), besides having a safe, clear path of access to your home? Please take a look at your residence(s) and make any necessary modifications in case the police, fire/EMS are called to your home, so that it is easily identifiable and accessible.

That’s it for this month’s Montauk Fire Department Corner. On behalf of myself and the Members of the Department, please have a safe and happy Easter and Passover. See you next month.
