July 1 (Thurs) 7 pm – THE LOST BOYS OF MONTAUK tells the story of the 1984 disappearance of the fishing vessel Wind Blown and its young, four-man crew. The tragedy is remembered keenly by many here in Montauk, and Amanda Fairbanks’s book about it has rocketed onto the bestseller list, garnering rave reviews in the national press, and inspiring spirited discussion here at home. We are very pleased to welcome Amanda to the Lighthouse, where she will read excerpts from her book and answer questions posed by Tom Clavin, bestselling author of DARK NOON, the brilliant, definitive book about 1951’s Pelican disaster.
July 6 (Tues) 2 pm – Chris Paparo, Manager of the Southampton Marine Science Center, will give a talk entitled “From Plankton to Whales – Why our local waters are worth protecting.” With endless stories and photos of fish kills, harmful algal blooms, oil spills, beach closures, etc. filling our daily newsfeeds, it appears that our environment is in a horrific state of “Doom and Gloom”. Although we do face many environmental challenges, this constant bombardment of negativity creates a lack of enthusiasm among local communities when it comes to protecting our environment. Regain your enthusiasm for protecting our marine environment by learning about some of the fascinating marine life that inhabits the waters of Long Island. This will talk will be given in the Oceans Institute at the Lighthouse.
July 15 (Thurs) 6 pm – Illustrated Talk: Noted explorer, marine scientist, photographer and filmmaker Gaelin Rosenwaks will speak at the OCEANS INSTITUTE AT THE LIGHTHOUSE.
July 13 (Tues) 2 pm – Lecture: Tara Rider, Stony Brook lecturer: “The Swashbuckling History of Women in Piracy.” Spanning the globe and centuries, female pirates have sailed the seas, captivating audiences both in their own times and today. July 29 (Thurs) – Lecture: Paul Shepson, Dean of the School of Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook: “Helping New York State lead in managing the change to a renewable and sustainable energy future.” Hear all about New York State’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), and its ambitious goals to completely change the way we produce and consume energy in New York State.
